Kano State High Court Sentences Newlywed Woman to Death for Husband’s Murder
KANO, Nigeria — A High Court in Kano State has sentenced Saudat Jibril to death by hanging after she was found guilty of murdering her husband, Salisu Idris, just nine days after their wedding.
The trial concluded with both the prosecution and defense presenting their evidence. The incident occurred in May 2025 in Farawa, a community within the Kumbotso Local Government Area of Kano State, where Jibril and Idris had recently begun their marriage.
Prosecutors, led by Barrister Lamido Abba Soron Dinki, presented testimony from three witnesses to support their case. In contrast, Jibril’s defense, represented by Barrister Abdulfatah Muhammad, called her as the sole witness.
In delivering the verdict, Justice Maryam Sabo stated that the prosecution had met the burden of proof beyond a reasonable doubt, accepting their evidence while rejecting the defendant’s testimony.
“The court finds the defendant guilty as charged and hereby sentences her to death by hanging,” Justice Sabo ruled.
Following the verdict, correctional service officials escorted Saudat Jibril from the courtroom to begin her sentence, pending any potential appeal.
