Teenage Girl Dies in Katsina; Father in Custody Amid Investigation

KATSINA, Nigeria — A teenage girl, identified only as Ummul Khair, has died in Katsina State, prompting a police investigation into the circumstances surrounding her death. Her father, Kabir Sani, is currently in police custody on allegations of physically assaulting her prior to her passing.

The incident took place in the Shagari Low-Cost neighborhood of Katsina metropolis. Local residents reported ongoing tensions between Ummul Khair and her father, stemming from plans for an arranged marriage to a suitor she reportedly did not wish to marry. This disagreement had led to frequent confrontations within the family, according to community members.

Witness accounts indicate that Ummul Khair may have endured a severe beating beginning on Wednesday. Neighbors stated they heard cries for help from the house but were unable to intervene as they were not permitted access.

One neighbor expressed growing concern after hearing the girl’s distress during the night. “We heard her voice and tried to find out what was happening, but no one was allowed into the house. The next thing we heard was that she had passed away,” the resident said.

Her death came to light when schoolmates arrived at her home to walk with her to school.

The Katsina State Police Command has confirmed that her father has been arrested in relation to the case. Police spokesperson DSP Sadik Aliyu stated that a comprehensive investigation is underway, and the suspect remains in custody as inquiries continue.
