APC kicks off campaign ahead of August 22 Ebonyi LG elections
APC Launches Campaign for Local Government Elections in Ebonyi State
The All Progressives Congress (APC) in Ebonyi State officially launched its campaign for the upcoming local government elections scheduled for August 22, emphasizing the importance of peaceful election practices and grassroots mobilization. The event took place on Monday in Ikwo Local Government Area, where party leaders urged constituents to collect their Permanent Voter Cards (PVCs) to ensure a successful outcome in the elections covering 13 local government areas and 171 wards.
Governor Francis Nwifuru, represented by Deputy Governor Princess Patricia Onyemaechi Obila, inaugurated the campaign by presenting the party’s flag to Henry Chidi Nwode, the APC chairmanship candidate for Ikwo, and his running mate.
During her address, Obila characterized the APC candidates as “tested, trusted, and marketable,” encouraging supporters to focus on issue-based campaigning. “It is your responsibility to go into every community and market them,” she stated, underscoring the need for a positive approach to the election. She highlighted the achievements of the outgoing Ikwo Chairman, Barrister Sunday Nwankwo, noting the foundation laid for future leadership.
Former Governor of Ebonyi State, Chief Martin Elechi, who served as the chairman of the occasion, reminded attendees that political campaigns should not be hostile. “Every citizen has the constitutional right to belong to any political party,” Elechi said, urging participants to conduct themselves lawfully throughout the campaign.
The Speaker of the Ebonyi State House of Assembly, Moses Odunwa, called for party unity and urged constituents to support APC candidates at all levels while advocating for peace leading up to the election. Comrade Chinedu Ogah, representing Ikwo/Ezza South Federal Constituency, described the event as the start of political mobilization and emphasized the importance of obtaining PVCs.
“Every vote will count,” Ogah remarked, while also hinting at future campaigns for the 2027 general elections. Chief Stanley Okoro Emegha, the APC State Chairman, expressed gratitude towards the people of Ikwo for their ongoing support, asserting that the party would secure victory.
Attorney-General and Commissioner for Justice Dr. Ben Odoh reiterated the APC’s stronghold in Ikwo, stating, “Ikwo is APC, and APC is Ikwo.” He reiterated the commitment of state officials to Governor Nwifuru’s administration and the party.
Ambassador Franklin Ogbuewu, Director-General of the APC Local Government Campaign Council for Ebonyi Central, expressed confidence in Governor Nwifuru’s continued popularity. Barrister Sunday Nwankwo described the choice of Ikwo for the flag-off as indicative of trust in its residents and affirmed the local government’s readiness to support the APC in future elections.
Henry Chidi Nwode, receiving the party’s flag, thanked the APC leadership and pledged to run a transparent and inclusive administration. He committed to focusing on rural infrastructure, youth and women empowerment, and improved healthcare and security.
Nwode assured supporters of vigorous grassroots campaigning while emphasizing the need for issue-based politics. He expressed confidence in the APC’s readiness for a successful outcome in the elections.
In separate messages, local APC leaders committed to mobilizing support to ensure a significant victory for the party in the forthcoming council elections.
