FCT Minister Responds to Criticism Over Jabi Park Sealing
Nyesom Wike, the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), asserted on Tuesday that he will not be intimidated or blackmailed while executing his responsibilities in Abuja.
During a monthly media session, Wike addressed criticisms from Omoyele Sowore, the presidential candidate of the African Action Congress (AAC), and other activists regarding the recent sealing of Jabi Recreational Park.
Wike noted that the park, awarded approximately 15 years ago, has remained underdeveloped due to the inaction of previous administrations. He expressed concern over the deterioration of the site, which has seen the emergence of informal vendors and neglected conditions.
“Some people took us to court over this matter,” Wike explained. “Fifteen years ago, this area was designated for development as a recreation park. I visited the location and saw shanties and vendors. This is not what we mean by a recreation center.”
He emphasized the need for change, stating, “How could this place be like this for the past 15 years? I had to revoke the original agreement. Following that decision, I received numerous calls urging me to reconsider. No area should remain abandoned like this.”
Despite criticisms, including accusations from Sowore, Wike reaffirmed his commitment to the park’s development. He described the current state of the park, saying, “Weeds have overrun the area, and there are people selling food. Is this the type of recreation center we envision?”
Wike acknowledged that the government cannot undertake all projects alone and will explore partnerships with private entities to facilitate development at the park.
