Benue Governor Commits to Supporting New Army Formations
MAKURDI, Benue State — Governor Rev. Fr. Hyacinth Alia has pledged his administration’s full support for the establishment of newly approved Nigerian Army formations in Benue State, including the construction and equipping of the headquarters for the new 5th Division.
Alia made this commitment during a meeting on Tuesday with a delegation from the Army Headquarters Implementation Committee at the Government House in Makurdi. He termed the creation of these military formations as a significant advancement toward enhancing security in the state, asserting that it would fortify the state’s security framework and boost public confidence.
The governor assured that the Benue State Government would allocate land for all designated military formations and units. He also indicated plans to provide necessary logistics to ensure the successful operationalization of the new division.
Expressing gratitude to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu for the recent approval and placement of the 5th Division headquarters in Benue, Alia also thanked the Chief of Army Staff and the leadership of the Nigerian Army for their decisive actions.
Furthermore, Alia acknowledged the longstanding desire among Benue residents for a stronger military presence to address persistent security challenges. He emphasized that the establishment of the new division would contribute positively to the region’s security landscape.
In tribute to those who have sacrificed their lives in the line of duty, the governor recognized the bravery of officers and soldiers serving in Benue, commending their roles in safeguarding lives and property.
During the meeting, Alia also congratulated Major General M. K. Gara on his appointment as the first General Officer Commanding (GOC) of the 5th Division, assuring him of the state government’s continued partnership with the Nigerian Army.
The Army Headquarters Implementation Committee is currently in Benue to facilitate the Federal Government’s approval for new military formations and units in the state. The visit aims to lay the groundwork for the effective establishment of the 5th Division and other authorized military units.
The committee was led by Major General Raymond T. Utsaha and was accompanied by Major General M. K. Gara.
