Governor of Osun State Accuses EFCC of Account Freezing Plans Ahead of Election
Osogbo, Nigeria — Osun State Governor Ademola Adeleke has accused the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) of planning to freeze the state government’s bank accounts in the lead-up to the governorship election scheduled for August 15.
A statement issued on Tuesday by Kolapo Alimi, the Commissioner for Information and Public Enlightenment, relayed the governor’s claims. According to the statement, the state government received credible intelligence indicating that the EFCC intends to freeze all Osun State government accounts.
The governor further alleged that the EFCC also aims to freeze the accounts of senior government officials, a move he contends would disrupt governmental operations in the days leading up to the election.
Adeleke characterized this alleged plan as “the height of lawlessness,” stating that any attempt to freeze state accounts would be an effort to paralyze government activities before the polls. “There is no legal basis or justification for any push to freeze the state government accounts. The anti-graft agency has no legal powers to freeze the account of a state government,” he asserted.
He emphasized that executing such actions would constitute an abuse of power and could adversely affect the administration’s capacity to function during a critical period for the state.
Governor Adeleke called the reported move an emerging threat to the overall integrity of the state government ahead of the election.
