Demolition of properties obstructing waterways has begun in Maitama, Abuja, following a directive from the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike. This decision comes in the wake of recent flooding that affected various areas of the city.
During an inspection of flood-affected regions on Sunday, Wike ordered the demolition of several buildings deemed to be blocking critical drainage channels. He emphasized that all structures hindering water flow must be removed before Saturday.
“We have identified where individuals have blocked channels meant for water passage, operating under the assumption that they would face no consequences,” Wike stated. “I have informed residents that just because an event did not occur yesterday does not guarantee it won’t happen today or in the future.”
Wike assured that immediate action would be taken, stating, “Now, something will happen. I’m going to bring those houses down. Every house on the water channel will go down. From now until Saturday, we will proceed with the demolitions.”
