Benue 2027: How far can Alia, Tinubu’s synergy go?

Benue State Sees Infrastructure and Health Improvements Amid Renewed Optimism

By Soni Daniel

Benue State is experiencing a shift in narrative as recent developments signal progress in infrastructure and healthcare, prompting renewed optimism among residents. Historically linked to insecurity and economic struggles, the state is now witnessing enhancements in roads, bridges, and industrial projects.

In various communities across the state, a prevalent sentiment is emerging: “Our Governor is working,” often followed by, “Our President is working.” This sentiment reflects increased public awareness of ongoing projects under the leadership of Governor Hyacinth Alia and President Bola Tinubu, spurred by a collaborative relationship between state and federal governments.

Major infrastructure initiatives include the Wurukum flyover and Makurdi underpass, both of which are central to the urban renewal efforts in Makurdi, the state capital. These projects aim to alleviate traffic congestion and improve connectivity between local communities and national highways.

The Oju-Awajir Road project is another significant development, facilitating access to previously isolated areas in Gwer East, Konshisha, and Oju Local Government Areas, ultimately enhancing economic activities in those regions.

In healthcare, the Benue State University Teaching Hospital has seen an investment exceeding N20 billion, enabling the provision of specialized medical services and attracting patients from around the region. Dr. Stephen Terungwa Hwande, the Chief Medical Director, highlighted the hospital’s state-of-the-art facilities as a testament to the governor’s commitment to healthcare improvement.

Additionally, the government is revitalizing the Otobi Water Treatment Plant in Otukpo to improve access to clean water for residents.

A critical infrastructure project is the near-completion of the Buruku Bridge crossing the Katsina-Ala River, which aims to connect farming communities in Buruku, Katsina-Ala, Logo, Ukum, and parts of Taraba State. The absence of a permanent bridge had previously hindered movement and commerce, impacting local farmers and traders.

The ongoing construction and dualization of the 258-kilometer Makurdi-Otukpo-Obollo-Afor-Enugu Highway, financed by the China Exim Bank and the Nigerian government, is also notable. Authorities anticipate the project will enhance connections between agricultural communities in the north and commercial centers in the south.

Governor Alia’s administration is pursuing an industrialization agenda, focusing on job creation and expanding the economic landscape. Efforts include the establishment of the Food Basket Brewery and plans to revive the Taraku Mill, a once-thriving enterprise in the region.

While Alia has expressed satisfaction with the progress made, he recognizes the need for further development. He is committed to fostering partnerships with investors to advance the state’s industrialization and reduce unemployment.

Deputy Governor Sam Ode commended the governor for expanding infrastructure and improving urban and rural development, emphasizing the positive impact on residents’ quality of life.

The role of borrowing to finance critical infrastructure was defended by Mr. Bayo Onanuga, Special Adviser to the President on Information and Strategy, who led a Federal Government delegation to Benue. He emphasized the importance of using borrowed funds for tangible projects that stimulate commerce and enhance connectivity.

The emerging collaboration between the Alia administration and the Tinubu government may have political implications as the 2027 elections approach. Current developments are seen as a model of effective cooperation between federal and state authorities, contrasting with past political rivalries.

As construction progresses and public infrastructure improves, the state of Benue is becoming a case study in how effective governance can foster growth. The extent to which these efforts will influence public perception and political outcomes in the upcoming elections remains to be seen.
