Police arrest five suspected telecom vandals in Lagos, recover truckload of iron rods

LAGOS, Nigeria — The Lagos State Police Command has apprehended five individuals suspected of telecommunication vandalism and recovered a truckload of suspected stolen iron rods in the Ibeju-Lekki area.
According to a statement from the police, the arrests were part of an ongoing effort to combat vandalism and the theft of essential infrastructure throughout Lagos.
The suspects, identified as Mohammed Shaibu, 26; Musa Zakari, 29; Abdullahi Bala, 22; Salisu Musa, 18; and Yahuza Bala, 20, were reportedly caught stealing iron poles designated for the construction of telecommunication masts. They were arrested while allegedly transporting the stolen materials in a truck.
The suspects are currently in police custody as the State Criminal Investigation Department (SCID) in Yaba conducts further inquiries. The police have indicated that investigations are ongoing to locate additional suspects believed to be involved in the operation.
The police commended the cooperation with the 81 Division of the Nigerian Army, stating that this collaboration played a significant role in the operation and the successful apprehension of the suspects.
Lagos State Police Commissioner Tijani Fatai reaffirmed the commitment to protecting critical infrastructure and ensuring accountability for those responsible for vandalism. He urged residents to report any suspicious activities in their communities to the police.
The public is also encouraged to use the police emergency lines to report emergencies and suspicious activities.
The investigation into the alleged vandalism and theft of telecommunication materials is ongoing.
