Seven die, seven injured as two vehicles collide in Niger
Seven people have died, and at least seven others were injured following a crash involving a Mazda and a Toyota Sienna on the Bida-Kutigi-Mokwa Road in Niger State. Initial reports from eyewitnesses suggested the death toll might be as high as nine, but the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) confirmed a total of seven fatalities.
The incident occurred early Sunday morning between the Lanle and Shaba Woro communities. According to the Niger State Sector Commander of the FRSC, Corps Commander Aishat Sa’adu, 18 individuals were involved in the collision.
The Mazda was traveling from Minna to Mokwa, while the Toyota Sienna was headed in the opposite direction from Lagos to Minna. Sa’adu indicated that the Mazda’s driver lost control while attempting to overtake another vehicle, leading to the crash.
The injured were taken to General Hospital in Kutigi for treatment, while the bodies of the deceased were transferred to a nearby mortuary. The accident resulted in extensive damage to both vehicles, requiring rescue operations to free several trapped passengers.
Sa’adu urged drivers to exercise caution, particularly when overtaking or navigating areas with limited visibility. She also advised motorists to avoid speeding and to take necessary breaks during long journeys to minimize fatigue-related accidents.
