FRSC blames excessive speeding, dangerous driving for Osun crash
Fatal Collision on Ife-Ilesa Expressway Attributed to Speeding
OSUN STATE, Nigeria — The Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) has reported that excessive speeding and reckless driving were the primary causes of a fatal accident along the Ife-Ilesa Expressway on Saturday.
The crash occurred in Tonkere town and involved a Toyota Hiace bus and a Volkswagen Golf. According to Corps Commander Sunday Adebayo, the collision resulted in the deaths of three individuals—two females and one male—while 20 others sustained injuries of varying severity.
Adebayo confirmed that the accident involved a total of 23 people, including 11 females, nine males, and three children—two boys and one girl.
“Three people died. Altogether, we have about 20 others who were injured in the crash,” he stated.
The sector commander emphasized the dangers of excessive speeding and urged drivers to avoid behaviors that could jeopardize the safety of other road users.
“Excessive speeding is killing. The accident happened due to over-speeding and dangerous driving,” Adebayo said.
Following the incident, FRSC patrol teams from both Ife and Ilesa were promptly dispatched to the scene for rescue operations. Adebayo noted that emergency responders arrived within five minutes of receiving a notification from a bystander.
“Our boys got to the place within five minutes. One of the members of the public alerted us, and we were already on the road by the time the incident happened,” he said.
The injured victims received medical attention, with those suffering minor injuries treated and discharged, while more seriously injured individuals remain under care.
The vehicles involved were subsequently removed from the expressway to restore normal traffic flow.
Adebayo appealed to motorists to reduce their speed, stating that slower driving can significantly lessen the severity of injuries and fatalities in the event of a crash.
“If you go at a lower speed, even if you are involved in a crash, the fatality will not be as much as what we saw this morning,” he noted.
He further implored drivers to recognize their shared responsibility toward other road users, stating, “Nigerians should respect other road users. They should appreciate that everyone has a right to use the road.”
To mitigate the risk of future accidents, the FRSC plans to continue its public enlightenment campaigns and road safety initiatives throughout Osun State.
