Anambra Police Deploy Operatives Amid First Niger Bridge Closure

AWKA, Nigeria – The Anambra State Police Command has initiated a deployment of operatives to oversee alternative routes due to the recent closure of the First Niger Bridge for repair work, as announced by the Federal Government last weekend. The closure commenced on Monday, September 7.

State Commissioner of Police Nnanna Oji Ama conducted an on-site inspection of the bridge and surrounding areas, along with heads of other security agencies. The inspection focused on ensuring compliance among motorists with the new traffic directives and assessing the effectiveness of diversion routes.

“This assessment was conducted to identify potential security, traffic, and public safety challenges that may arise from the bridge closure,” a police spokesperson stated. “We aim to implement proactive measures to mitigate these issues.”

To maintain security and facilitate effective traffic management, the Command has established a Police-led Joint Security Team at critical points around the bridge and on the diversionary routes. Their responsibilities include preventing criminal activities and ensuring the smooth movement of motorists, commuters, and pedestrians.

The Commissioner has further instructed all Area Commanders, Divisional Police Officers, and Tactical Commanders in the impacted zones to enhance operational readiness. This includes intensified patrols and sustained visibility, as well as coordination with other security agencies throughout the maintenance period.
