Abia Govt seals house built on river bank, orders tenants to vacate
The Abia State Government has temporarily sealed a building situated on the bank of a river due to safety concerns associated with the structure.
In an announcement made Monday at the Government House in Umuahia, Abia State Commissioner for Information, Okey Kanu, urged tenants to vacate the premises for their safety.
Kanu highlighted that the decision to seal the building aims to prevent potential fatalities. The announcement followed a meeting of the State Executive Council chaired by Governor Alex Otti.
Mr. Kingsley Agomuo, the General Manager of the Umuahia Capital Development Authority, advised residents of the affected building, located in the Afara area, to heed the evacuation order promptly. He noted that the construction of the building had not received the necessary approvals and was precariously located at the river’s edge.
“We have visited the house and advised everyone staying inside to vacate, and we have sealed the building,” Agomuo stated.
In related news, Kanu reported that the Abia State government is distributing three million insecticide-treated nets to residents as part of its campaign against malaria.
Moreover, he mentioned that erosion control efforts are currently underway in the Emede Ibeku community, where homes and lands have suffered from significant gully erosion over the years.
