Flood allegedly sweeps away 12-year-old girl in Umuahia
A 12-year-old girl, identified only as Ella, was swept away by floodwaters in the Agbama area of Umuahia, Abia State, on Monday evening. The incident occurred around 7 p.m. during a heavy rainstorm that lasted approximately five hours, raising concerns among local residents.
According to reports, Ella was sent on an errand when she fell into a large drainage ditch. Witnesses noted that the gutters in Agbama, particularly along Road Two and in the World Bank area, were obscured by rising water levels, which contributed to the tragic incident.
Upon learning that the girl had been swept away, residents quickly formed a search party that extended their efforts to the drainage systems at Low Cost Housing Estate, World Bank Housing Estate, and the Umuafai community. The initial search concluded around 10:30 p.m. Monday night and resumed on Tuesday morning; however, it did not yield any results in locating the missing girl.
As of the latest updates, no official statement had been released by relevant government agencies regarding the incident. Attempts to reach the Abia State Police Command and the State Homeland Security Agency for comment were unsuccessful as of 7 p.m. Tuesday.
