Plateau MACBAN alleges killing of herder, 18 cows by ‘Berom militias’

The Plateau State chapter of the Miyetti Allah Cattle Breeders Association of Nigeria (MACBAN) has reported a violent incident in which a herder was killed and 18 cows were slain in Nyarwai village, situated in the Fan District of Barkin Ladi Local Government Area. The organization characterized the assailants as “Berom militias.”

In a statement released on Wednesday, MACBAN state Chairman Ibrahim Yusuf Babayo claimed the attack occurred around 1 p.m. while herders were managing their cattle. He stated that two additional herders sustained injuries during the assault, and several cattle were reportedly rustled.

Babayo identified the deceased as Yakubu Ishaku and expressed deep sorrow over the incident, labeling it as part of an ongoing cycle of violence that continues to aggravate tensions among communities within the state.

Condemning the attack, Babayo described it as “one too many,” emphasizing the unfortunate loss of both human life and livelihoods, which he said threatens the peace and harmony sought by the state’s residents. He urged security agencies to conduct a thorough investigation into the attack, apprehend those responsible, and ensure accountability under the law.

Additionally, Babayo called on the Plateau State Government to enhance measures for protecting the lives and property of all law-abiding citizens, regardless of their ethnic or religious backgrounds. He emphasized the commitment of MACBAN to peaceful coexistence and urged the Fulani community to remain calm, avoid retaliation, and cooperate with authorities during the investigation process.
