UCL: Ismail Kartal resigns as Fenerbahce manager after 1-1 draw with Roma
Ismail Kartal has resigned from his position as manager of Fenerbahce following the team’s 1-1 draw with Roma in the Champions League on Thursday evening.
Kartal, who has a long history with the club as both a player and assistant coach, stated he will not return to Fenerbahce. “I stepped down from my duties this evening,” he told reporters. “I made this decision to clear the way for my club. I resigned while the path is still clear, with no intention of ever returning.”
Having returned to Fenerbahce for a fourth managerial stint in June 2026, Kartal played a pivotal role in leading the team back to the Champions League for the first time in 18 years.
Club president Aziz Yildirim has reportedly declined to accept Kartal’s resignation.
