Chisco Group Donates Buses to Aid Transportation of Inmates in Lagos
The Chisco Group has donated two buses to the Medium Security Custodial Centre in Ikoyi, Lagos, aimed at enhancing the transportation of awaiting-trial inmates to court and supporting inmate rehabilitation efforts nationwide.
The buses, which can accommodate up to 100 people combined, were presented as part of the celebrations for the 70th birthday of Chief (Dr.) Chidi Anyaegbu, the Founder and Executive Chairman of Chisco Group.
According to the company, the buses are fully maintained and will bolster the Centre’s capacity to transport awaiting-trial inmates safely and efficiently for their court appearances.
This initiative was spearheaded by Chief Anyaegbu with the support of Chief Obinna Anyaegbu, the Managing Director of Chisco Transport Limited and Machine Nationwide Limited, along with members of the Chisco Group and the Millennium Circle, a social-impact organization.
The donation addresses a significant operational challenge within Nigeria’s criminal justice system: the shortage of reliable vehicles for transporting inmates to court. The Nigerian Correctional Service has noted that insufficient court transport options can hinder the timely processing of awaiting-trial cases.
The Medium Security Custodial Centre currently houses over 3,000 awaiting-trial inmates, many of whom experience long delays in the resolution of their cases. Inadequate transportation often leads to missed court dates, resulting in further adjournments.
Chief Chidi Anyaegbu expressed that the initiative was a response to a critical issue affecting access to justice. He stated, “Justice cannot move efficiently when the people who require it cannot get to court. These buses are our contribution towards making the justice process more accessible and effective.”
Chief Obinna Anyaegbu emphasized that this intervention is intended as a long-term commitment rather than merely a ceremonial gesture. “We are applying Chisco’s experience in mobility, fleet management, and automotive maintenance to an important public need,” he said.
The Chisco Group plans to support the ongoing maintenance of the vehicles and will monitor their usage along with correctional authorities to evaluate their impact on court attendance and the progression of cases.
As part of this initiative, the Group will set up performance indicators to measure the influence of the buses on the number of court movements completed, the inmates transported, and any decrease in missed court appearances connected to insufficient transportation. They will also track vehicle availability and overall maintenance performance.
In addition to improving court access, Machine Nationwide Limited has vowed to support automotive maintenance training for eligible inmates. The goal is to enhance the Centre’s workshop capacity and provide participants with practical skills in vehicle maintenance and related fields.
The training aims to help inmates develop employable skills and improve their reintegration prospects once released. The officer in charge of the Medium Security Custodial Centre welcomed this intervention and expressed enthusiasm for collaborating with Chisco Transport Limited and Machine Nationwide Limited on vehicle maintenance, workshop development, and technical training.
Chief Obinna Anyaegbu noted the importance of preparing individuals for productive lives post-release, stating, “Correctional intervention must extend beyond confinement. Skills, dignity, and legitimate economic opportunities are essential to reducing reoffending.”
The Chisco Group acknowledged the ongoing efforts of the Federal Government and the Nigerian Correctional Service in reforming the correctional system but also highlighted the need for active participation from the private sector and civil society.
