Fintiri backs Kanu’s proposal for football tournament in Adamawa

Governor Ahmadu Fintiri has approved a proposal from former Nigerian international footballer Nwankwo Kanu to host a football tournament in Adamawa State.

During a meeting at the Government House in Yola on Tuesday, Fintiri expressed his support for the initiative, which aims to foster local talent. The tournament, named the Governor’s Cup, will feature teams from all 21 local government areas across the state.

Fintiri emphasized the importance of supporting youth development through sports, stating that an administration that neglects this aspect risks falling behind. He envisions the tournament as a platform for young aspiring footballers to showcase their skills.

The governor pledged his backing for the event, expressing hope that the final match will take place at a newly constructed ultramodern stadium currently being built by his administration.

Kanu highlighted the opportunities football has afforded him throughout his career and asserted that similar pathways should be available to young people in Adamawa. He added that the Governor’s Cup would provide a means for scouts to identify talented players and connect them with professional clubs.
