NDLEA officer drowns while chasing suspects into River Ethiope
The National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) reported the death of one officer and the hospitalization of another after both jumped into the River Ethiope while pursuing suspected drug offenders in Obiaruku, located in Delta State’s Ukwuani Local Government Area, on Saturday.
The incident occurred during an operational raid on suspected drug activity. While attempting to apprehend a suspect, who reportedly leaped into the river to evade capture, the two officers followed suit. Tragically, one officer drowned, while the other was rescued and transported to a local hospital.
According to community sources, the suspect and others involved managed to escape by swimming across the river. Following the recovery of the drowned officer’s body, traditional rites associated with drowning in Obiaruku were performed before the remains were released to the appropriate authorities. These rites reportedly included the offering of a goat and other ceremonial items.
NDLEA officials assured local residents that a comprehensive investigation into the incident is underway. Bright Edafe, the Police Public Relations Officer, urged the public to remain calm as authorities continue to address the situation.
