LAWMA arrests 14, seizes scores of carts in Lagos enforcement
The Lagos Waste Management Authority (LAWMA) has apprehended 14 individuals and confiscated numerous carts reportedly used by illegal waste collectors during enforcement operations across Lagos State.
This announcement was made on Monday via a post on the Lagos State Government’s official Instagram account. The recent operations aimed to combat illegal dumping and unauthorized waste collection throughout the state.
Dr. Muyiwa Gbadegesin, Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer of LAWMA, stated that these enforcement initiatives demonstrate the authority’s commitment to enhancing compliance with waste management regulations and addressing practices that disrupt the established waste collection and disposal system.
According to Gbadegesin, the operation in Lagos Island included areas such as Idumota, Oke-Popo, Tom Jones, and Tinubu, where 14 arrests were made for various violations related to waste management. He highlighted one notable offence involving the illegal disposal of waste into the lagoon, underscoring that these actions are part of broader efforts to enforce approved waste management regulations across the region.
Additionally, officials seized a significant number of carts from suspected illegal waste collectors functioning along the Lagos-Badagry Expressway.
Gbadegesin emphasized that these enforcement operations are necessary to prevent activities that could undermine the state’s waste management system and to ensure that refuse is collected and disposed of through proper channels.
LAWMA reiterated its dedication to continued actions against illegal waste disposal and unauthorized waste collection in Lagos. The authority also urged both residents and waste operators to comply with established waste management regulations, as enforcement efforts persist throughout the state.
