NLO explains adoption of new format for 2026 Cup

The Nationwide League One (NLO) has announced a shift to a home-and-away league format for the 2026 Cup competition, a move aimed at increasing the number of fixtures for participating teams.
Dr. Olushola Ogunnowo, the NLO Chief Operating Officer, discussed the decision during an interview with the league’s media channel. He indicated that the total number of games would vary based on the size of each competition zone.
“A key benefit of the new NLO Cup format is the guaranteed increase in match opportunities,” Ogunnowo said. “Rather than a single knockout fixture, the league format provides a broader schedule of competitive games.”
He further emphasized that the revamped NLO Cup promotes a more organized and competitive atmosphere for clubs. “With more fixtures, players can showcase their skills, coaches can enhance team performance, and clubs can strengthen their competitive identity,” Ogunnowo noted.
The implementation of the home-and-away format, he added, will offer clubs the chance to engage their supporters at home while also presenting the challenges of away games.
