SSANU, NASU threaten strike over unpaid salary adjustments at Yobe varsity

The Senior Staff Association of Nigerian Universities (SSANU) and the Non-Academic Staff Union of Educational and Associated Institutions (NASU) at Yobe State University (YSU) have issued a warning of a potential strike in response to the university administration’s failure to implement agreed-upon salary adjustments for non-teaching staff.

Comrade Ibrahim Liman, Chairman of SSANU’s YSU branch and the Joint Action Committee (JAC), announced the unions’ decision on Monday. He indicated that the unions have prepared to withdraw their services should the management not address their salary concerns.

Liman expressed his dissatisfaction with what he described as inequitable treatment of university employees, highlighting that while teaching staff have received their salary adjustments, non-teaching staff remain unpaid.

“This situation is unjust, given the essential roles non-teaching staff fulfill in the university’s administration and daily operations,” Liman said.

He emphasized that the impending action is a collective decision by both unions under the JAC’s auspices and warned of the impacts that a strike could have on administrative and technical services at the university.

Liman also called for immediate intervention to ensure fair treatment of all staff categories within the university system.

This development occurs amid the ongoing implementation of 2026 salary agreements between the government and university-based unions. At the time of this report, the university administration had not responded to requests for comment.
