Transfer: ‘Madness’ – Paul Merson identifies five players Man Utd hierarchy made mistake signing
Speaking to Sky Sports ahead of Manchester United’s Champions League match against AS Roma on Tuesday night, commentator Paul Merson expressed concerns over the club’s recruitment strategies. He highlighted players such as Bryan Mbeumo, Matheus Cunha, Benjamin Sesko, Youri Tielemans, and Andre Santos as examples of misjudgments by the team’s decision-makers at Old Trafford.
Merson stressed that bolstering the attacking lineup should have been Manchester United’s top priority. However, he criticized the forwards acquired, suggesting they lack the goal-scoring prowess needed to elevate the team’s performance.
He specifically questioned the rationale behind the £50 million signing of Santos, stating, “I don’t know what the club saw in Andre Santos to justify that transfer deal.” Regarding Tielemans, Merson commented that the midfielder “lacks the legs around him in Manchester United’s team.”
Merson also dismissed the notion that the club will focus on strengthening their defense in the upcoming transfer window, calling the overall approach “madness.”
