Lent, Ramadan: Divine invitation to transcend our differences – Peter Obi

Peter Obi Calls for Unity During Lenten and Ramadan Periods

Former Labour Party presidential candidate Peter Obi has urged Nigerians to use the simultaneous observance of Lent and Ramadan as an opportunity to rise above sectarian differences and embrace shared values.

In a post on his verified account Wednesday, Obi referred to the overlap of these sacred seasons as “a rare spiritual convergence.” He emphasized that this event transcends mere coincidence, symbolizing a moment of collective reflection, sacrifice, and the potential for rejuvenation in a nation facing governance challenges.

Obi noted that both observances are characterized by fasting, prayer, and thanksgiving. “Wednesday, February 18, 2026, marks a moment of extraordinary spiritual convergence in Nigeria, a nation richly blessed with resources yet hindered by ineffective leadership,” he stated. “For the first time in many years, the Christian season of Lent coincides with the Muslim holy month of Ramadan.”

He suggested viewing this convergence as a “Double Fast,” calling it a divine invitation for Nigerians to bridge their differences and reconnect with their shared humanity.

As Christians and Muslims across the country engage in fasting and prayer, Obi emphasized their united purpose in seeking divine mercy for the healing of Nigeria. He remarked that this shared season of reflection could lead to intensified prayers addressing the nation’s pressing issues of insecurity and economic hardship.

“Prayer alone, however, is insufficient; it must be accompanied by action,” he cautioned. Obi urged Nigerians to practice charity, forgiveness, and the self-discipline advocated by both faiths during this period. He described it as a necessary spiritual reset for the country.

“This season should be one of deep spiritual engagement,” Obi said. “Let our hunger remind us of our neighbors’ suffering and may our prayers shield our nation. I hope that our sacrifices are accepted and that this unique alignment paves the way for lasting peace and unity across Nigeria.”

Obi concluded with wishes for a blessed Lenten season and a prosperous Ramadan, expressing his belief that through collective prayer and resolve, a renewed Nigeria is achievable.
