Amnesty International Condemns Attack on Opposition Politicians in Benin City
Amnesty International has condemned a violent incident targeting opposition politicians in Benin City, Edo State, which resulted in casualties.
In a statement released on its official X account, the human rights organization reported that gunmen opened fire on a convoy of politicians, including Peter Obi, at the residence of former Edo State Governor John Odigie-Oyegun.
“Amnesty International strongly condemns yesterday’s deadly attack on prominent opposition figures in Benin City, Edo State, as gunmen opened fire on a convoy of politicians,” the organization stated.
The group characterized the incident as part of a troubling trend of violence against opposition members across Nigeria. They emphasized that no individual should face violence or lose their life for participating in peaceful political activities.
Amnesty International issued a warning that ongoing attacks and intimidation against opposition figures could hinder their ability to engage freely in political discourse and public assemblies.
The organization has called on the Nigerian government to conduct a prompt, independent, and thorough investigation into the incident.
