I’m accused of killing opposition in Nigeria but I’ve no gun – Tinubu

President Tinubu Addresses Opposition Accusations at Iftar Event
Abuja, Nigeria — President Bola Tinubu responded to recent accusations claiming he is undermining the political opposition, asserting he does not possess a firearm or any means to carry out the alleged actions.
Delivering remarks at an interfaith breaking of fast event with senators at the Presidential Villa on Wednesday, Tinubu dismissed the allegations, noting that critics are entitled to their opinions. He emphasized his innocence regarding claims of violence against opponents, stating, “When they accused me of killing the opposition, I didn’t have a gun.”
Acknowledging the difficult circumstances facing Nigeria, including threats from terrorism and banditry, Tinubu expressed understanding for those who choose to leave politics amid such turmoil. “I can’t blame anybody for jumping out of a sinking ship,” he remarked, referring to the challenges currently experienced in the country.
The president urged unity among political leaders, aligning with the vision of Nigeria’s founding fathers. He emphasized the importance of strengthening constitutional democracy as a pathway to national cohesion. “We should unite in a way that our forefathers contemplated,” he said, noting that democracy should facilitate cooperation rather than conflict.
Despite ongoing challenges, Tinubu expressed optimism regarding leaders working together harmoniously for the nation’s progress.
