A federal forensic team has uncovered 105 bodies from multiple mass graves in the Yelwata community, located in the Guma Local Government Area of Benue State. This operation is part of an ongoing investigation into the violent incident that occurred on June 13, 2025.
The team, led by Prof. Saad Ahmed from the Office of the Attorney-General of the Federation, arrived in Yelwata on February 23, 2026. They were accompanied by operatives from the Intelligence Response Team (IRT) based in Abuja.
In addition to the forensic team, members of the Presidential Medical Delegation collaborated with officials from the Benue State Emergency Management Agency (SEMA). The burial sites were identified on the same day under the protection of the Benue State Police Command. Excavation efforts commenced on February 24, yielding the initial recovery of seven bodies.
Operations continued on February 25 and 26, ultimately leading to the exhumation of remains from 13 separate mass graves near Yelwata. The excavation efforts concluded on February 26.

A security source noted, “Seven corpses were initially exhumed by the IRT-led federal investigators for inquest. The exercise continued and further developments will be communicated.”
This forensic operation follows the arraignment of nine suspects in the Federal High Court in Abuja on February 2, 2026. Justice Joyce Abdulmalik emphasized the importance of scientific evidence to ensure due process in determining accountability for the violence.
Authorities confirmed that measures were in place to maintain security and prevent any disruptions during the operation.
