Abia: 109 arrested for environmental offenses in Umuahia

109 Arrested During Environmental Sanitation in Umuahia
UMUAHIA, Abia State — A total of 109 individuals were arrested in Umuahia on Saturday for violations of environmental sanitation regulations, including loitering, playing football in the streets, and conducting trade during designated cleanup hours from 7 a.m. to 10 a.m.
According to the Abia State Ministry of Environment, enforcement teams apprehended the offenders and presented them to the Environmental Mobile Court at the High Court in Umuahia, where Magistrate Onyinyechi Ibekwe presided.
Among those arrested, three medical students were released after verifying their identities, along with twelve others who were freed due to health issues.
The Mobile Court prosecuted 94 individuals, who were ordered to pay fines and perform community service for breaching the Abia State Basic Environmental Laws.
Philemon Ogbonna, the state’s Commissioner for Environment, praised residents for their participation in the sanitation efforts. Represented by Happiness Agbụlọnụ, Head of the Department of Pollution Control and Environmental Health, Ogbonna expressed concern over non-compliance among traders in Orie Ugba market as well as in transport hubs like Okigwe and Owerri parks, which were observed accepting passengers during the sanitation period.
Kalụ Mba Nwoke, Chairman of the Abia State House of Assembly Committee on Environment, warned that those violating environmental laws would face increased penalties starting in March 2026.
