Phone-tapping equipment: ICPC now political weapon – El-Rufai’s son, Bello

Rep. Mohammed Bello El-Rufai Accuses ICPC of Political Bias
Mohammed Bello El-Rufai, a member of the House of Representatives representing Kaduna North and son of former governor Nasir El-Rufai, has accused the Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission (ICPC) of being utilized as a political tool against his father.
The allegations arose following the ICPC’s announcement of the discovery of wiretapping devices at the elder El-Rufai’s residence in Abuja. In a statement he issued, the younger El-Rufai criticized the commission for what he described as overreach and improper conduct.
Titled “The Insecurity of ICPC,” his statement suggested that the commission’s claims reveal internal irregularities. Bello alleged that the agency appears implicated in the very misconduct it is meant to combat, including the purported creation of false documents.
He characterized these actions as unprofessional, asserting that they undermine the commission’s credibility and integrity, which he believes have been compromised for political motives. Bello announced that he has instructed his legal team to contest what he termed unlawful investigative measures and misleading statements from the ICPC.
“I am hopeful that the courts will clarify the facts and reveal the truth,” he said.
In his statement, Bello claimed that the ICPC’s release aims to manipulate public perception, containing allegations and documents that do not adhere to the commission’s expected standards. He accused the agency of misusing its authority and being repurposed for political goals.
“We will resist any efforts to subject us to public judgment through processes that lack credibility and fairness,” he added.
