High Court in Kano Sentences Two to Death for Murder During Robbery
KANO — A High Court in Kano has sentenced two men to death by hanging following their conviction for the murder of a newly married man during a robbery.
Aliyu Hussaini and Amir Zakariyya were found guilty of conspiracy, armed robbery, and culpable homicide in the killing of Yazid Haruna. The court heard that the incident occurred on June 11, 2025, at approximately 2:47 a.m. in the Sheka Sabuwar Abuja Quarters of Kano.
During the proceedings, prosecutor Lamido Abba-Sorondinki detailed how the defendants armed themselves with long knives and machetes before attacking Haruna. “They robbed the victim of two mobile phones and N19,500 before stabbing him in the stomach, chest, and head, leading to his death,” he said.
The prosecution presented three witnesses and medical reports to substantiate its case. Despite the evidence, Hussaini and Zakariyya denied the charges against them.
The prosecution noted that the defendants’ actions contravened Sections 97(1), 298(c), and 221(a) of the Kano State Penal Code. In a plea for leniency, defense attorney Haruna Saleh-Zakariyya allowed the defendants to testify in their own defense.
In her ruling, Justice Amina Adamu-Aliyu stated that the prosecution had established its case beyond a reasonable doubt. “The actions of the defendants are inhuman. The robbery of mobile phones has become rampant,” she remarked.
The court sentenced both men to one year in prison for conspiracy and life imprisonment for armed robbery in addition to the death penalty for culpable homicide.
