PDP not bothered despite having only two governors left – Makinde

PDP Leaders Address Party Challenges Amid Defections
Oyo State Governor Seyi Makinde assured members of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) that they are not concerned about the party’s diminishing number of governors, stating that current internal turmoil will soon pass.
Makinde spoke Tuesday in Abuja at an expanded meeting of the party’s Board of Trustees (BoT). He characterized the ongoing defections as a difficult period for both the PDP leadership and the broader landscape of Nigerian democracy.
His comments followed the recent resignation of Dauda Lawal, the governor of Zamfara State, which left Makinde and Bala Mohammed of Bauchi State as the party’s only remaining governors.
Despite this setback, Makinde expressed optimism that the PDP would navigate through its challenges. “It’s a challenging period for us as leaders and members of the Peoples Democratic Party. It is also a challenging period for democracy in Nigeria,” he said.
He emphasized that, while the party is down to just two governors, they remain undeterred. “When the story of this period is told, when the story of democracy in Nigeria is told, they will find us on the side of the people,” he added.
Makinde urged members to reflect on their role during this tumultuous period, stating, “We must be conscious of what history is going to record against or for us for this period.”
Former Senate President Adolphus Wabara also addressed the gathering, noting that the party must seek solutions to its current challenges. He pointed to a recent Appeal Court ruling as an opportunity for the PDP to reorganize effectively.
Wabara called for adherence to the party’s constitution and the rule of law, asserting, “We must work in accordance with the Constitution. And you can never go wrong if you abide by the Constitution and the rule of law.”
He urged participants to keep discussions concise, indicating that the meeting’s goal would be to facilitate a serious decision-making process within the party.
The event marks a critical moment for the PDP as it seeks to stabilize and maintain its relevance in Nigerian politics in light of recent defections.
