Afrobeats mainly for Lagos, Yorubas – Omah Lay

Controversy Erupts as Omah Lay Comments on Afrobeats and Ethnic Representation
Nigerian singer Omah Lay has ignited debate following his assertion that the Afrobeats genre predominantly represents the Yoruba ethnic group, suggesting that artists from other backgrounds find it challenging to enter the Lagos music scene.
Speaking at the listening party for his upcoming album, Clarity of Mind, Omah Lay, who hails from Port Harcourt, recounted the difficulties he faced in establishing himself within the Lagos music industry. He described the experience as exhausting and noted that achieving recognition required significant effort.
“I am at a point where I no longer seek validation from the Lagos or global music industry. I find contentment in the support of my fans and family,” he stated.
During his remarks, Omah Lay emphasized the cultural roots of Afrobeats, referencing the genre’s pioneer, Fela Kuti, and stating the genre’s strong ties to Lagos. He pointed out that only two notable artists from Port Harcourt have gained prominence: himself and Burna Boy.
He expressed a shift in priorities, opting to focus on those who truly appreciate his work. “I am going to take my time and look at my family and fans; people who really love me. The rest of you, the rest of the world, don’t love me,” he said.
