E-registration: INEC’s delay affecting NNPP membership drive – Founder

E-registration Delay Impacts NNPP Membership Drive, Founder Says

The New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP) has expressed concerns regarding delays by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) in updating the party’s leadership information on its website. This situation, according to party officials, is hindering the party’s registration and membership efforts across the country.

Dr. Boniface Aniebonam, founder and chairman of the NNPP Board of Trustees, addressed the issue in a statement released Thursday in Lagos. He noted that INEC had previously mandated all political parties to electronically register their members to facilitate participation in the upcoming 2027 general elections.

Aniebonam emphasized that the party’s membership drive has been hampered by ongoing disputes within the NNPP, particularly involving factions led by Senator Rabiu Kwankwaso. He pointed out that INEC has not complied with a court order to recognize the National Working Committee led by Agbo Major.

“The delay has previously resulted in the NNPP’s inability to field candidates in certain elections, which is both regrettable and embarrassing,” Aniebonam stated. He expressed concern that potential candidates are increasingly doubtful about the party’s viability for the 2027 elections.

Despite the challenges, Aniebonam encouraged party stakeholders to remain patient, noting that the NNPP’s online registration portal is now active. “We are hopeful that INEC will take necessary actions without further delay, and we anticipate that former members who departed during recent controversies may consider rejoining,” he added.

He acknowledged the departure of Governor Abba Yusuf of Kano State and others, attributing this to the ongoing legal disputes. “We understand their decisions but are committed to improving our position before the 2027 elections,” Aniebonam said.

He reaffirmed that Kwankwaso and his supporters, including Elder Buba Galadima, remain expelled from the party, asserting that such actions serve as a reminder of the consequences of anti-party activities.
