Four killed as soldiers, unknown gunmen clash in Cross River

Nigerian Army Engages Gunmen in Cross River State Clash
Cross River State, Nigeria — Troops from the 13 Brigade of the Nigerian Army clashed with unidentified gunmen in the Obubra Local Government Area on Thursday, resulting in the death of four assailants. One soldier sustained injuries and has been transported to a nearby hospital for treatment.
The confrontation began as soldiers, returning from operations in the Ochon and Alesi communities, encountered an unanticipated ambush by armed men. According to Army officials, the situation escalated into a fierce exchange of gunfire.
Lieutenant Yemi Sokoya, Assistant Director of Army Public Relations for the 13 Brigade, confirmed the incident in a statement. “During efforts to clear the obstruction, the soldiers came under a coordinated ambush, leading to a fierce exchange of fire,” he said.
Following the initial engagement, reinforcements from the 245 Battalion were deployed with armored and tactical support vehicles to assist the 13 Brigade. Sokoya noted that these reinforcements played a crucial role in repelling the attackers and regaining control of the area.
In addition to the four gunmen who were neutralized, several others managed to escape the scene. The wounded soldier is currently receiving care at Jennifer Hospital in Ochon.
The Army has initiated cordon-and-search operations in communities believed to be linked to the attackers, aiming to apprehend those who fled and prevent further security incidents.
Brigadier General Patrick Alimikhena, Commander of the 13 Brigade, commended the troops for their bravery and professionalism during the engagement. He reassured residents of Cross River State of the Army’s commitment to ensuring safety and maintaining peace in the region.
