Nigerians fume as Nollywood stars Kunle Afolayan, Yomi Fash, others launch Tinubu support group

Nollywood Stars Face Backlash for Supporting Tinubu’s Re-election Bid Amid Economic Struggles

LAGOS, Nigeria — A group of prominent Nollywood actors, including Kunle Afolayan, Yomi Fash-Lanso, Ayo Adesanya, and Remi Surutu, have faced significant criticism from the public following the launch of a support group for President Bola Tinubu’s re-election campaign. The group, named the “Eko 57 Movement,” was unveiled in Lagos State on Sunday and is coordinated by actor Lege Miami.

As Nigeria grapples with increasing economic challenges, many citizens have expressed their discontent over the celebrities’ decision to endorse the President. Social media reactions to a video of the event have been particularly harsh, with numerous users accusing the actors of failing to recognize the dire circumstances faced by many Nigerians.

Critics have warned that celebrities who endorse the administration should not seek public sympathy for financial assistance during personal hardships. Commentary on platforms like X has focused on the pressing need for systemic change, including real-time transmission of electoral results, which many argue is more crucial than any support movement.

One user, referencing the lack of basic services, stated, “No light. Fuel price increased. U don’t talk about it. Shame on Y’all.” Another user remarked, “Make una sha no disturb us if any of una get problem and need the public sympathy,” implying that the group’s support for the President conflicts with the struggles of ordinary Nigerians.

Additional comments highlighted issues such as insecurity, poor healthcare, and the high cost of living under the current administration. One user succinctly stated, “The only movement we need is mandatory real-time transmission of electoral results and nothing else.”

Despite the backlash, the Eko 57 Movement proceeds with its agenda, drawing attention to the divide between celebrity culture and the everyday realities many Nigerians face. The juxtaposition of high-profile support against the backdrop of socioeconomic difficulties continues to resonate in ongoing public discourse.
