Attacks on Gov. Alia won’t stop Benue voters from re-electing him – Onjeh

APC Chieftain Defends Governor Alia Amid Criticism
Daniel Onjeh, a prominent member of the All Progressives Congress (APC) and the party’s 2023 senatorial candidate for Benue South, has defended Governor Hyacinth Iormem Alia against recent criticisms. In a statement issued on Sunday, Onjeh asserted that voters in Benue State remain supportive of the governor, dismissing the backlash as “last-minute desperation” from political opponents who he claims are losing influence.
Onjeh alleged that the governor’s detractors are engaging in “coordinated propaganda” aimed at undermining Alia’s administration through misinformation and sustained attacks. He expressed confidence that such efforts would ultimately fail, emphasizing that the public can recognize the positive changes occurring under Alia’s leadership.
Addressing internal party dynamics, Onjeh refuted claims that certain factions have gained control of the APC structure in the state. He described these assertions as unfounded, insisting that the party upholds democratic principles and that decisions are not made by a select few. He reiterated that Chief Benjamin Omale is the legitimate state chairman of the party and affirmed Alia’s leadership role in Benue.
Onjeh also noted the success of reconciliation efforts within the APC, indicating that party members who had previously expressed dissent or defected are now reuniting. He reassured supporters that the party has become more cohesive at the grassroots level, ready for the upcoming 2027 elections.
Reflecting on Alia’s governance, Onjeh acknowledged that while the governor does not claim to be perfect, he remains focused on addressing the state’s challenges. He suggested that the administration’s accomplishments should be assessed based on tangible results rather than political rhetoric, referencing the shortcomings of previous governments.
Onjeh urged both President Bola Ahmed Tinubu and the public to dismiss suggestions that Alia’s election was merely a political favor, insisting his leadership has fortified the APC in the state. He recounted his participation in the 2023 campaigns, stating that he witnessed Alia’s commitment to the party, even in challenging circumstances.
He emphasized that attempts to mislead the electorate would be unsuccessful, stating that the voters in Benue are “more aware and discerning.” Onjeh expressed confidence in Alia’s midterm performance, asserting it exceeds that of prior administrations, while encouraging residents to be patient as development progresses across the state.
Concluding his statement, Onjeh called for prayers for peace and progress in Benue and urged support for Alia’s re-election campaign. He expressed optimism for a stable and productive future under Alia’s continued leadership.
