Child playing with lighter triggers fire disaster in Kwara

Fire Incident in Ilorin Linked to Child Playing with Lighter

ILORIN, Kwara State—A fire incident was reported on Thursday evening in a three-bedroom flat after a child was playing with a lighter. The fire broke out at approximately 5:08 p.m. at No. 38 Aduagbemi Street, behind Uniform Company, off Asa Dam Road.

Hassan Adekunle, spokesman for the Kwara State Fire Service, confirmed that one of the rooms in the flat was affected. Preliminary investigations indicated that the child used the lighter to ignite pieces of paper, which then ignited combustible materials nearby, resulting in the fire.

Firefighters were alerted by neighbors, who noticed the flames. Upon their arrival, emergency responders quickly contained the fire, preventing it from spreading to other areas of the building and to adjacent properties.

Alabi Muhammed, the director of the State Fire Service, urged parents and guardians to keep matches, lighters, and other ignition sources out of children’s reach. He emphasized the importance of supervising children at all times and educating them about the dangers of playing with fire.

Additionally, Muhammed recommended that residents install basic fire safety equipment in their homes and promptly report any fire incidents to the service. Early intervention, he noted, significantly reduces the risk of extensive damage and loss of life.
