EPL: Alan Smith speaks on Super Eagles’ Fernandez’s move to Arsenal

Alan Smith Questions Feasibility of Fernandez Transfer to Arsenal
Former Arsenal striker Alan Smith has expressed doubts regarding reports linking Emmanuel Fernandez to a summer transfer to the north London club. He raised concerns about both the need for reinforcements in Arsenal’s central defense and Fernandez’s readiness for a more competitive environment.
Fernandez, who began his career at Rangers at the start of the current season, has enjoyed a successful debut year in Scotland. The 24-year-old has exceeded expectations at Ibrox Stadium, establishing himself as a key defensive player while also contributing to the team’s offense.
His consistent performances have earned him recognition, including his first call-up to the Nigeria national football team and selection to the Scottish PFA Team of the Year. This level of achievement has drawn interest from multiple European clubs, including Arsenal, Bayer Leverkusen, and Feyenoord.
Despite Fernandez’s success, Smith remains skeptical about the viability of a transfer to Arsenal at this point in the player’s career. Speaking to the Scotman, Smith questioned the necessity of adding a central defender to the team’s lineup. “I don’t see why they’d need a centre-half anyway,” he stated, referencing Fernandez’s previous clubs, which include Spalding United on loan and Peterborough.
While Smith acknowledged Fernandez’s admirable performance in Scotland, he voiced uncertainty about the player’s ability to maintain that level in a more demanding league. “Yes, he’s had a good season at Rangers, but who knows whether he can sustain that kind of form at a higher level?” Smith commented.
Smith further noted Arsenal’s current defensive strengths as a potential barrier to any transfer. “I’d be surprised if Arsenal pursued him, given that [Jurrian] Timber can play in the middle; plus they’ve got [Cristhian] Mosquera, so they’ve got good cover in the middle,” he concluded.
In his time at Rangers, the Nigerian international has made a significant impact, contributing six goals in 29 appearances across all competitions this season.
