Vice Chairman Abducted in Osun State Attack
Ora, Osun State — Debo Farounbi, the Vice Chairman of Ifedayo Local Government Area, was abducted late Monday night by gunmen during an attack on the community of Ora, a town located along the Osun-Kwara border.
The Osun State Police Command confirmed the kidnapping through spokesperson Abiodun Ojelabi, who stated that security forces are actively working to secure the safe return of Farounbi.
According to local residents, the attackers struck around 10 p.m., firing gunshots and instilling fear among the community’s inhabitants. Initial reports indicated that four individuals were taken, including Farounbi. Local volunteers and security personnel intervened during the incident, prompting the assailants to release three of the victims before fleeing with the vice chairman.
A local resident, who wished to remain anonymous, described the event: “Four people, including the Ifedayo Local Government Vice Chairman, were taken away. But the resistance from security personnel forced them to abandon three of the victims. They went away with Farounbi.”
Ojelabi affirmed the immediate response from law enforcement following the incident. “One person was abducted. He is a local government vice chairman, Hon. Debo Farounbi. Immediately the incident happened, the military and police responded. Efforts are in place to rescue the man,” he said.
The police spokesperson also noted that investigations are ongoing to uncover the circumstances surrounding the abduction.
This incident marks the third reported kidnapping event in Ora in the past seven months, raising concerns about safety and security in the region.
