Hunter shot dead in Delta, family petition demands investigation, justice

Petition Filed Following Shooting Death of 31-Year-Old in Delta State

Otu-Jeremi, Delta State — Olorogun Amrevuawho Peter, head of the Edariese family, has submitted a formal request to the Divisional Police Officer (DPO) in Otu-Jeremi, urging an impartial investigation into the shooting death of 31-year-old Lucky Omole.

Omole was shot by unidentified gunmen in the Ovwodokpokpor-Olomu community, located in the Ughelli South local government area of Delta State. Peter has also called for swift action to ensure that those responsible are held accountable.

The incident, which has ignited renewed demands for justice and thorough police inquiry, occurred in broad daylight on a main street, witnessed by residents and fellow hunters who were present during the attack.

According to local sources, the shooting took place on June 30, 2026, as Omole was returning from a hunting expedition. After being critically injured, he was transported to the Federal Medical Centre in Ovwian, where he later died. His body has been placed in the General Hospital morgue in Otu-Jeremi.

Community members reported that Omole, a resident of Ogbe Street in Ovwodokpokpor-Olomu, was ambushed while with other hunters, some of whom may provide eyewitness testimonies.

In his petition, Peter, a former chairman of the Delta State chapter of the Committee for the Defence of Human Rights, characterized the incident as a “clear case of murder.” He refuted suggestions that Omole had ties to cult-related activity, stating that the victim lived peacefully and was not involved in the reported violence earlier that week.

Peter emphasized the need for a comprehensive and unbiased investigation by the police, asserting that justice must be served to restore public trust in law enforcement and ensure the safety of law-abiding citizens. He also alleged that certain individuals claiming to be community leaders may have supplied weapons to the assailants, referencing a pattern of violence against members of the Edariese Efejama family in the area.

As of now, the Police Public Relations Officer for the Delta command, SP Bright Edafe, has yet to confirm the details of the incident.
