Inspector-General of Police Urges Newly Promoted Officers to Uphold Integrity and Accountability
The Inspector-General of Police, Olatunji Rilwan Disu, has called on newly promoted Assistant Inspectors-General of Police (AIGs) and Commissioners of Police (CPs) to adhere to the highest standards of integrity, professionalism, and accountability. During a recent decoration ceremony, the IGP emphasized that their promotions signify an increase in responsibilities rather than simply recognition of past achievements.
Disu congratulated the officers on reaching this significant milestone, describing their promotions as a well-earned acknowledgment of their dedication and exemplary service to the Nigeria Police Force. He noted that the officers have earned the trust of the organization through their commitment to their duties.
The IGP acknowledged the personal sacrifices made by police personnel, including extended separations from their families and challenging working conditions. “I understand the toll of serving under such circumstances. Those sacrifices have not gone unnoticed,” he stated, referring to missed family occasions and extended deployments.
He reminded the promoted officers that their new ranks position them as role models for junior officers, asserting that their character and discipline will set a standard for others to follow. Disu stressed the importance of leading with integrity and cautioned against corruption and abuse of power.
He stated, “I expect you to lead with unwavering integrity, exhibiting zero tolerance for any form of misconduct. Additionally, I expect you to lead with compassion.” According to Disu, the relationship between officers and their superiors should reflect genuine care for their well-being.
The IGP also highlighted the need to develop a modern, intelligence-driven, and technology-oriented police force while fostering strong community relationships. He asserted that public trust is essential for effective policing, noting that it distinguishes between actionable intelligence and the silence that arises from eroded trust.
Disu assured officers of the police leadership’s continued commitment to their welfare and professional development. He encouraged the newly promoted officers to mentor junior personnel and uphold the values of the Force.
In a message to the families of the officers, he acknowledged their vital support and sacrifices, indicating that the promotions reflect their resilience as well. “Every sacrifice you made contributed to this accomplishment,” he said.
The IGP also expressed gratitude to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu for his support and commended the Police Service Commission for ensuring a transparent and credible promotion process.
In closing, Disu urged the AIGs and CPs to wear their new ranks with humility and pride. “Lead in a way that inspires hope. Together, we will continue to build a Nigeria Police Force that is professional, disciplined, accountable, and unwavering in its service to the people,” he concluded.
