Ijebu-Ode gas emission tied to underground geological fractures not myth – Ogun Govt

Ogun State Addresses Recent Gas Emissions in Ijebu-Ode

The Ogun State government confirmed that the recent gas emissions in Ijebu-Ode and surrounding areas are linked to natural underground geological activities, rather than cultural myths or beliefs.

In a series of incidents, approximately 200 students and staff from Our Lady of Apostles Secondary School, Anglican Girls Grammar School (AGGS), and other nearby institutions required hospitalization due to the chemical emissions.

Governor Dapo Abiodun ordered the temporary relocation of students from Our Lady of Apostles Girls Grammar School to ensure their safety while experts conduct a detailed analysis of the emissions’ source.

During a Town Hall meeting on Saturday, Ola Oresanya, the Commissioner for Environment, stated that scientific evaluations indicated the presence of mainly methane and sulfide gases. He explained that these gases are surfacing from underground fractures or fault lines.

Oresanya elaborated on the significance of the Ifewara-Zungeru transatlantic fault line, which runs through Mojoda, Ijebu-Ode, into Osun State and extends to Niger State. He noted that this geological feature has existed for centuries and coincides with the locations of the affected schools. Historically, much of the area was largely uninhabited, and many of the impacted schools were established on land donated by local leaders.

The commissioner added that the state government is investigating whether the emitted gases are thermogenic or methanogenic and to determine if Ijebu-Ode is situated above significant gas reserves.

Dr. Tomi Coker, the Commissioner for Health, urged residents of Ijebu-Ode and surrounding areas to remain calm and to take precautionary health measures, such as covering their noses with wet handkerchiefs and avoiding ineffective face masks during gas emissions.

Abayomi Arigbadu, the Commissioner for Education, Science and Technology, assured the public that schools recently closed would reopen following discussions with school principals and regional education officials. He emphasized the need for patience from parents as the government works through these necessary arrangements.

During the meeting, community representatives, including Adegbenro Adetayo, Olawale Kukoyi, Monday Ajayi, and Mrs. Morayo Adebanjo, expressed gratitude for the government’s response and encouraged residents to contact health authorities whenever necessary.
