Insecurity: State police not solution – Lawyer Idam

Activist Lawyer Challenges State Policing as Solution to Nigeria’s Insecurity
In a statement issued Thursday, activist lawyer Maduabuchi Idam asserted that implementing state policing is not an effective remedy for Nigeria’s ongoing security issues.
Idam expressed concerns that placing police forces under the jurisdiction of state governors could jeopardize the safety of opposition figures, critics, and those perceived as political adversaries. He argued that the current political climate, marked by power struggles and personal interests, renders state policing an inadequate solution to the nation’s challenges.
“State policing is neither the desired solution nor a sustainable answer to Nigeria’s security challenges,” Idam said. “It raises serious concerns about the protection of civil rights and distracts from the genuine security issues at hand.”
He emphasized that allowing state governors to control law enforcement could significantly undermine the integrity of elections. “With governors exercising direct control over police forces, the likelihood of free, fair, and credible elections is diminished,” he warned.
Idam urged the government to carefully consider the implications of new policies. “Not every proposal should be enacted into law,” he stated, suggesting that some ideas should remain subjects of public discourse rather than immediate implementation.
In summary, Idam cautioned that state policing might lead to even greater security challenges than those Nigeria currently confronts.
