June 12: MKO Abiola refused to sell presidential mandate to Abacha – Oshiomhole

Senator Adams Oshiomhole Discusses Legacy of MKO Abiola at Lecture

Akure, Ondo State — Edo North Senator Adams Oshiomhole highlighted the integrity of the late MKO Abiola during a lecture commemorating June 12, titled “June 12 and Beyond.” The event, held in Akure, focused on the evolution of democracy and security issues in Nigeria.

Oshiomhole recounted his experiences with Abiola following the annulment of the June 12, 1993, election. He was part of a delegation from the Nigeria Labour Congress that met with then-military leader Sani Abacha. During their discussions, Oshiomhole recalled Abacha’s willingness to make concessions but stated that “the one thing he was not ready to tolerate was the idea that Abiola had proclaimed himself President of Nigeria.”

Despite significant pressure from government representatives, Oshiomhole asserted that Abiola remained steadfast in his commitment to the mandate given to him by the Nigerian electorate. “He told those who sent us that he was elected President of Nigeria and would not sell the mandate entrusted to him by the Nigerian people,” Oshiomhole said.

The senator praised Abiola’s courage and his dedication to the nation, emphasizing that Abiola’s stance resonated with many Nigerians who had made significant sacrifices for his presidential bid.

Oshiomhole urged young Nigerians to take inspiration from the events surrounding June 12, describing Abiola as a symbol of national unity who transcended ethnic and religious differences.

In addition to reflecting on Abiola’s legacy, Oshiomhole noted the commitment of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu to expedite constitutional reforms aimed at establishing state police forces. “The President is really committed to moving quickly and getting the state police amendment passed,” Oshiomhole stated. “He has clearly told us to get it done, but he can’t just make it happen on his own.”
