KDSG warns against flood, launches awareness campaign

Kaduna State Enhances Preparedness for Potential Flooding Risks Following Climate Report

Kaduna State Government is ramping up public awareness and emergency preparedness initiatives in response to recent seasonal climate predictions from the Nigerian Meteorological Agency (NiMet). The 2026 Seasonal Climate Prediction report highlights Kaduna as one of the states facing an elevated risk of flooding due to anticipated above-normal rainfall during the upcoming rainy season.

In a statement released by Malam Ahmed Maiyaki, the Commissioner for Information and Culture, the government has committed to implementing proactive measures to protect lives and property through coordinated disaster response efforts.

The NiMet report indicates that rainfall in Kaduna is expected to begin between May 19 and June 10, 2026, with an end date projected between October 5 and October 21 of the same year. The forecast also warns of a potential 21-day dry spell occurring between June and August, which could exacerbate flooding and related environmental issues.

“The Kaduna State Government is taking this forecast seriously,” Maiyaki stated. “Early preparedness and public cooperation remain critical to minimizing the impact of flooding on our communities.” He noted that the Ministry of Information and Culture, in partnership with the Kaduna State Emergency Management Agency (KADSEMA), has initiated a statewide sensitization campaign to educate residents on flood prevention and safety measures.

Residents are urged to undertake several preventive actions, including clearing drainages near homes and businesses, refraining from dumping waste into waterways, and utilizing sandbags and other local flood control measures.

In addition, Maiyaki has called upon traditional institutions, religious leaders, media organizations, civil society groups, and other stakeholders to assist the government in promoting environmental sanitation and disseminating reliable information to the public.

KADSEMA is actively conducting vulnerability assessments in flood-prone areas and enhancing emergency response coordination. Pre-positioning for rescue operations in high-risk zones has also begun.

“The safety of citizens remains a top priority for the Kaduna State Government,” Maiyaki concluded. “We will continue to collaborate with relevant agencies and communities to ensure timely information dissemination and effective disaster risk reduction strategies throughout the rainy season.”
