LASU condemns assault of student at off-campus hostel, begins probe
Lagos State University (LASU) has condemned the assault of a student at a privately operated hostel outside its campus and has initiated disciplinary proceedings against students allegedly involved in the incident.
The university made this statement on Friday in Lagos, through a release signed by Mrs. Oluwayemisi Thomas-Onashile, the Deputy Registrar and Coordinator of the Centre for Information and Public Relations.
According to Thomas-Onashile, the incident involved students from LASU’s College of Medicine in Ikeja and occurred at a private hostel. The affected student has since reported the matter to the police, who are taking appropriate actions in response.
While the alleged assault took place off-campus, LASU management has begun an internal disciplinary process against those students implicated, consistent with the institution’s regulations.
“The university management unequivocally condemns this act of violence in the strongest terms,” Thomas-Onashile stated, emphasizing that the university does not tolerate acts of assault, intimidation, or harassment among students, staff, or visitors, regardless of location.
She highlighted that such behaviors are incompatible with the university’s values and principles. Students are reminded of their duty to uphold the standard of being “worthy in character and learning,” in accordance with LASU’s mission to foster graduates who excel academically while also exhibiting good moral character.
The university advised students to exercise caution in their daily activities and to avoid situations that may compromise their safety. Thomas-Onashile also encouraged prompt reporting of any security threats or concerns to the appropriate authorities.
Additionally, she called on parents and guardians to cooperate with the university in promoting discipline, urging them to engage constructively and respect established boundaries. Parents should encourage responsible behavior, integrity, and discipline in their wards.
LASU reiterated that the safety and welfare of its students are a top priority and affirmed its commitment to maintaining a secure environment conducive to learning and academic achievement. Thomas-Onashile assured that the institution will continue to implement measures to ensure a safe and supportive educational setting for all students.
