Lekki Port Phase 2 construction set for kick-off, says Lagos govt

Lekki Port Phase 2 Construction to Begin Soon, Lagos Governor Announces

LAGOS — Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu of Lagos State announced this week that construction on Phase 2 of the Lekki Port project will soon commence. This initiative is part of the state’s strategy to bolster its position as the leading maritime and logistics hub in West Africa.

During the Invest Lagos Summit 3.0, Sanwo-Olu emphasized Lagos State’s commitment to enhancing key infrastructure and attracting investment. He noted that the expansion of the port will significantly increase its cargo handling capacity, promoting maritime trade and strengthening Lagos’ role as a gateway to the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA), a market comprising over 1.4 billion people.

“With the AfCFTA creating a market with a combined GDP exceeding $3 trillion, Lagos occupies a uniquely strategic position,” Sanwo-Olu said. He added that the Lekki Deep Sea Port is approaching the limits of its current capacity, making the transition to phase two essential.

The governor highlighted that these plans are not merely aspirational; they are actively being funded and implemented, transforming the investment landscape of the state.

Wang Qiang, Managing Director of Lekki Port, praised the Lagos State Government for fostering a stable and investment-friendly environment. Qiang stated that the next phase of development will be crucial for expanding the port’s operational capabilities and improving logistics efficiency along the Lekki corridor. He also mentioned that it would attract further global shipping and logistics investments.

“This expansion aligns with Nigeria’s broader trade facilitation agenda and the growing demands of regional and international shipping networks,” Qiang noted. He expressed optimism about the continued support from the Lagos State Government, which has created a forward-looking environment for long-term maritime investments.

“The initiation of this next phase marks a significant milestone in our efforts to enhance Lekki Port’s capacity and operational efficiency, solidifying its status as a premier gateway for West African trade under the AfCFTA framework,” he added.
