Modibbo Adama University Teaching Hospital Discharges Successfully Separated Conjoined Twins

YOLA, Nigeria – The Modibbo Adama University Teaching Hospital (MAUTH) has discharged a pair of conjoined twins following a successful separation surgery performed by the hospital’s surgical team.

During a discharge ceremony on Saturday, Professor Bakari Girei Adamu, the Chief Medical Director, emphasized the significance of the achievement, noting that the surgical team consisted entirely of Nigerian medical professionals based at the hospital. “It is heartwarming that all the professionals are domiciled here,” he stated. He expressed the hospital’s commitment to elevating Yola as a center for medical tourism, aiming to ensure that local residents have access to comprehensive medical care without needing to leave the region.

Dr. Aliyu Damburam, a former Chief Medical Director now serving as a paramount ruler, chaired the event and remarked on the hospital’s reputation for advanced medical care, reinforcing its role as a pillar of healthcare in the region. He recalled that this latest successful separation marks the sixth incident of conjoined twins being separated at the facility since 2013, highlighting the institution’s efforts to minimize foreign medical tourism.

Professor Auwal Muhammad Abubakar, the lead surgeon for the procedure, pointed out that the successful outcomes of such surgeries in Nigeria demonstrate the nation’s capabilities in medical care, contingent on adequate training and resources.

The twins, named Hassan and Hussain, were brought to the hospital from the Bali Local Government Area of Taraba State. According to reports, the surgery took place on March 9, and all medical care provided—spanning from the surgery to post-operative care—was offered at no cost, funded by the hospital management, the Tertiary Education Trust Fund, and additional sources.
