Nasarawa police arraign 19 offenders, seize 27 vehicles in number plate enforcement drive

Nasarawa State Police Crack Down on Vehicle Registration Violations

Nasarawa State, Nigeria – The Nasarawa State Police Command has bolstered its enforcement of vehicle registration regulations, resulting in the impoundment of 27 vehicles and the prosecution of 19 motorists. These actions are part of a broader initiative aimed at enhancing public safety and supporting crime prevention through rigorous adherence to vehicle identification laws.

In a statement issued on June 18, 2026, police spokesperson SP Ramhan Nansel reported that the charges against the motorists included operating unregistered vehicles, using covered or defaced number plates, and displaying unauthorized foreign registration plates.

This enforcement effort was initiated in response to a directive from the Inspector-General of Police, Olatunji Rilwan Disu, who called for a nationwide crackdown on vehicles violating registration laws. Nansel emphasized the security risks associated with unregistered vehicles and obscured number plates, which can be exploited by criminal elements to hide their identities and evade detection.

Commissioner of Police in Nasarawa State, Shetima Jauro Mohammed, has instructed officers to maintain robust enforcement across the region. He clarified that the initiative aims to enhance public safety rather than create undue burden for compliant vehicle owners.

“The initiative is not intended to inconvenience law-abiding citizens but to enhance public safety and strengthen crime prevention efforts,” Mohammed stated. He urged vehicle owners to ensure their vehicles are properly registered and display valid, clearly visible number plates.

The Commissioner warned that motorists found in violation of registration laws will face ongoing arrest and prosecution, reinforcing the Command’s dedication to compliance.

Furthermore, the police appealed for public cooperation, underscoring that effective enforcement of vehicle registration laws is vital for combating crime and improving security in the state. The Police Command reiterated its commitment to safeguarding lives and property, assuring residents that measures aimed at enhancing security will persist.
