Nigerian govt debunks terror attack on FGGC Monguno, says students safe
The Federal Government has refuted social media claims suggesting that the Federal Government Girls’ College (FGGC) in Monguno, Borno State, was attacked by terrorists, asserting that the institution remains safe and secure.
In a statement released Monday, the Federal Ministry of Education, through its Director of Press and Public Relations, Folasade Boriowo, addressed widespread concerns following reports linking FGGC to a recent security incident in the area.
The ministry emphasized that “there was no attack on Federal Government Girls’ College, Monguno,” highlighting that all students, staff, and boarding facilities are fully protected and accounted for. Teaching and boarding activities at the school have continued without interruption, and the ministry labeled the circulating reports as “false and misleading,” cautioning that such misinformation could incite unwarranted panic among parents and the public.
Minister of Education Dr. Maruf Tunji Alausa reiterated that the safety and welfare of students at all Federal Government Colleges is a top priority. He noted that FGGC operates under stringent security measures designed to safeguard all individuals on campus.
The ministry clarified that the victims of the security situation involved were remedial students located outside of FGGC, and it confirmed that the Borno State Government has started to implement safety and welfare measures for them. “No student of Federal Government Girls’ College, Monguno, was involved in the incident being falsely linked to the school,” the statement noted.
Furthermore, the ministry urged journalists, bloggers, and social media users to verify information through official sources prior to dissemination. It warned that spreading unverified information could evoke unnecessary fear and undermine public confidence, detracting from ongoing efforts to maintain safe learning environments nationwide.
Parents and guardians were encouraged to remain calm, assured by the ministry that there is currently no security threat at the FGGC, and reaffirming the government’s commitment to collaborating with security agencies and relevant stakeholders to ensure the safety of students in Federal Government Colleges across the country.
